Owning a pet is a joy, but some people remain pet free due to allergies. Typically, allergens found in animal saliva, dander or urine cause the negative reaction. Fear not, there are animals that make great pets for those with allergies.
1 Sphynx Cat
Cats excrete the CH1 allergen from their saliva and skin. While not technically hypoallergenic, the Sphynx is one cat that allergy sufferers could call their own. Free from shedding, this hairless cat has both a distinct look and personality. Friendly and incredibly smart these curious felines love to cuddle in the lap of their owner.
2 Bichon Frise
Dog breeds with curly coats are considered lower-allergen because it is difficult for dander to escape. This variety of dog requires frequent grooming of their puffy white hair so most of the dander will remain at the salon and not your home. Great house dogs, these friendly and outgoing pooches love to learn and preform tricks.
3 Syrian Hamster
Remaining mostly in their cage, the Syrian hamster is another great choice. It may be possible to handle the little guy on occasion without issue. The most commonly owned breed, the Syrian, can provide endless entertainment exploring and playing with the toys in his cage.
4 Leopard Gecko
It is extremely rare for someone to be allergic to lizards. Hairless and low-maintenance, lizards are a great for first time and young pet owners. Several species of lizards require live feeding so if you’re not up for the task, select a breed for your comfort level. Most love to be held and are comfortable sitting on your knee or shoulder. Owners with more than one report each having different and individual personalities.
5 Portuguese Water Dog
The long hair on the Portuguese Water Dog can be deceiving, but they are actually a good choice for those with pet allergies. Easily trained, this active breed loves to play, be outdoors and swim. Rarely shedding, this breed requires regular grooming, meaning less dander in your home. Suffering from bad pet allergies doesn’t stop the daughter of President Obama from playing with Bo, which happens to be a Portuguese Water Dog.
6 Devon Rex Cat
The short wavy coat of the Devon Rex make this breed one an allergy suffering cat lover could consider as a pet. Highly intelligent, they are able to recognize their own name and their owners. This breed loves interacting with people, playing games and hilarious antics. Great companions, Devon Rex shadow their owners and once sitting will nap in your lap.
7 Goldfish
Residing in a glass enclosed water environment and completely free of allergens make fish excellent pets. Easy to care for and requiring little time commitment, goldfish are a popular choice. Although tropical fish tanks are alluring they require more care and equipment to maintain. You don’t have to settle for a standard goldfish, there are several amazing species including Shubunkin, Fantail and Tosakin, from which to select your perfect pet.
